BT (British Telecom) the backbone of Tele communication and a company known to nearly every individual in the UK has declared to discontinue or close their option of free web hosting services. This decision has brought dissatisfaction to a large volume of BT customers in the UK using Free
Webspace hosting services. Now, inorder to continue using the service, people would need to pay £5 GBP (ex. VAT) per month or £60 GBP per year (ex. VAT).
According to the email from Warren Buckley, the MD Customer Service at BT seems to have appealed to the users to save or move the website and the data to avoid any hassles in the future. Moreover, BT has even saved the efforts of its existing customers of reading between the lines and has put it straight by offering an option for the BT users to switch the hosting service to another provider of their choice.
Until the decision to stop offering Free WebSpace Hosting service, BT offered web space of 50 Mb for its customers, whereas now with the starter package users who are interested in continuing the service would get to use 5GB web space, 48GB Bandwidth and a limitation of only 1 domain to be hosted at the cost of £5 GBP (ex. VAT) per month. This has raised the eyebrows of many customers who don’t need these resources for their hobby, personal and small business sites. The decision to discontinue free hosting and replacing it with a starter plan, has raised the dissatisfaction levels of the customers. Hence the hunt for web hosting provider in the UK who offer services at a cheaper price have started to increase.
There are multiple questions that’d be running through the minds of individuals, for that purpose BT has created a page that gives answers to most of the commonly asked questions.
BT doesn’t seem to have given a final date when the services would be taken down, hence the users using free web space hosting would need to act fast and secure their website data at the earliest.
