Increase in incorrect use of META tags, like keyword stuffing & using fake keywords can decrease your chances of gaining top search engine results as they do not produce much effective outcome. But it is imperative to add Meta tags in process of SEO as they give a boost to the overall performance.
Primitive & earlier Search engines had been encouraging Meta description as a part to know the contents of a website. Therefore with liberal use of Meta tags, websites used to emerge on top slot of SEO ranking. But with advancement in coding technology, search engines no longer rely on such old techniques. They assess the total site & create their own knowledge of the content in the web site. Therefore Meta tags have lost the capability to uplift site to top rankings. However if effectively used, with a combination of SEO can produce a desirable result.
